|
Imagine a week on the Navarro River . . . painting, sculpting, playing, resting
Our intergenerational camp, now in its 37th year, provides the opportunity to explore your creative side through expert leadership in a variety of mediums: pottery, watercolor and mixed media, visual journal, creative writing, music and drama. Younger children will be introduced to nature-based crafts and have the opportunity of an afternoon session at the pottery studio and the painting studio. In addition there will be opportunities for adults to receive guidance in writing, making music and/or glazing a pot. Evenings will be given over to campfires, group singing, brown bag dramatics, star-gazing. Program begins Monday afternoon July 30, ends Sunday lunch, Aug 5. 5% early bird discount - register before May 1! Other discounts for 1st time participants, too! Each year, a mix of families and individuals, some who have come for years, and others for the first time, find spiritual and artistic nourishment playing, resting and creating on this land and in the river for an amazing six-day retreat. There is a gentle balance between the freedom to pursue your own interest and guided program.
A healthy camp village culture is supported by gathering for a short time before dinner to hear stories for the day or share gratitude and practices that honor elders and youngers, and interconnection. We use a successful nature-based leadership model of “8 shields”, in which 8 people - camp participants and RB staff tend essential elements of village culture - the spirit of welcome, inclusion, play and fun, artistic focus, physical well-being, honoring teachers and times for story and culture of the camp, as well as honoring mystery and the need for quiet.
After dinner, we have a variety of rich program offerings, from campfires with sing-alongs to variety show night and Japanese Sumi Ink painting instruction.

Morning Classes
"Painting and Mixed Media: Material Fictions" Kathleen Thompson, assisted by Skylar Thompson
The story of art from the cave paintings to the Abstract Expressionists has been about narrative, personal and collective. What are the stories we can imagine and create?
This is a hands on mixed media class for all levels. We will be working with a combination of traditional painting and experimental materials to explore creating narrative and meaning through our process. A variety of media will be introduced including:Watercolor, watercolor mono-printing, encaustic ,found objects, fabric, collage material, old books, cigar boxes.
Participants may want to use this class as an open studio to continue their own work and process.
Participants are free to explore and create in the redwood garden with others, expansive vegetable-flower garden, at the river, or field trip to nearby Hendy woods. Watercolors, brushes, paper, collage materials and monoprint equipment provided.
Kathleen received an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute and is currently teaching at UCB-Extension in
San Francisco. She has exhibited her work widely and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Richard Diebenkorn painting award. She is a working artist living in Sebastopol.
Materials fee: $15
"The Sound of Clay; Ceramic Musical Instruments" Joel Bennett, assisted by Michael Hofmann
In this workshop we'll explore making shakers, ocarinas, and possibly Udu drums. Handbuilding techniques will be demonstrated, as well as different surface decoration and glazing techniques. As always we will be making our own clay body, using some local clay from the Narvarro River. The workshop will culminate in an exciting evening of Raku Firing enjoyed by all camp participants.
Joel has been a ceramic artist for over 40 years. A faculty member at Santa Rosa Junior College, he is active in the community as artist-in-residence, art and workshop instructor. An award-winning ceramist, Bennett’s work has been exhibited internationally and represented by galleries throughout California, the Southwest and Midwest.
Artist’s Visual Journal (with Option to use this class to get support for imaging/planning for a film or still photograph visual creation - see below.)
Our teacher, Nayo Bradbury has successfully brought this class to all ages. It is common for artists to keep a diary where they express their creative thoughts every day. This is referred to as a visual journal. A Visual Journal is created in a secret language of symbols. Intentional or not, they can be private maps that only their makers can follow. This course will introduce you to an array of media and content possibilities as well as the work of visual-journaling masters, past and present. She incorporates movement and various techniques for connecting with imagination and “seeing”.
If you are interested in using visual journal for Film and Study of light and composition within nature, you can also receive support in the filmmaking process and exercises, culminating in a one-day shoot and screening of your work in progress. Digital cameras, go-pros are all options if you are interested in exploring this form of visual creation. PLEASE NOTE: that there will be just one morning of using technology, and all other experiences encourage connection to other materials and the natural world and one’s own inner thoughts and ideas.
$15/person class fee
Nayo Bradbury is an artist, educator and San Francisco native with an MFA and M.ED from UC Berkeley. Her favorite thing to do is to help kids create murals and her favorite medium as an artist is Fresco. She has exhibited her art in Boston, MA. , Lacoste and Paris France, San Francisco, Ca. and Sonoma County, CA. Some of her visions have taken form through public installations, murals, performance art and theatrical set design. She has worked with ceramic, ice, marble, limestone, sculpted canvas, found objects, wood and plaster. “Being able to take an image from your imagination and give life to it in a tangible 3-dimentional form, is magical to me.”
Sandra combines her lifelong love of art and with her desires to teach and share her knowledge. She has been teaching art to a variety of ages for over 25 years, both in the public and private arenas. Essential to her teaching is offering freedom with materials and encouraging freedom of expression and the experience of collaboration. She currently is teaching in Sonoma County in many of local public and private schools, public libraries, Park and Rec in Healdsburg, Sonoma State University’s Youth Excel Program, Healdsburg Center for the Arts, Cloverdale Arts Alliance, and with home schooled children. She is dedicated to ensuring that children receive an enriched education in the arts. ‘The best part of teaching art for me is, I share what inspires me, in the hopes it will inspire my students and in turn, they always end up inspiring me to be a better teacher and artist!“ Sandra is also honored to be a Mom of a very talented and expressive 14 year old son, who ignites her world with enthusiastic creativity daily.
A 2nd Teacher will join Sandra so classes may be divided to provide attention and materials and projects for appropriate for both young and older kids.
